The Produce Traceability Initiative

The Produce Traceability Initiative is an effort to improve traceability across the produce supply chain. PTI improves upon GS1 by creating additional guidelines for using GS1 effectively for produce labeling and handling. The Traceability Blockchain supports PTI by tracking both the transfer and transformation of produce to acheive complete traceability.

Because of the importance of traceability in the produce industry, there are many exciting software programs and platforms helping the produce industry properly label and track items. The Traceability Blockchain allows the solution providers supporting the produce industry by providing a Blockchain solution to achieve complete traceability using existing solutions.

Traceability Blockchain Basics

In order to provide a secure asset transfer system, the Blockchain stores assets as a series of inputs and outputs. This is what makes the Blockchain secure for cryptocurrency and an excellent system for tracking assets through the supply chain. The Traceability Blockchain uses GS1 identifiers to create identifiers for non-monetary assets

Product Transfer

When a member of the supply chain either ships or receives produce, the data can be posted to the blockchain using the Traceability Blockchain API. The combination of blockchain address, GTIN, and Lot Number is hashed to create a unique asset identifier allowing data to be privately stored on the blockchain.

Product Transformation

Product transformation occurs any time the GTIN of a product changes. The GTIN may change because the product is repackaged into retail packaging or it may change when the product is used as an ingredient in another product.

Authenticity of Additional Data

Documents or data ensuring the authenticity of a product or supporting the safe handling of the product is anchored to the Blockchain using cryptographically secure objects (CSOs). CSOs combine all relevant data at the point in time into a secure object that is signed using a SHA-256 hash and included in the Blockchain. The CSO provides two functions; 1) It ensures the documents are have not been changed since they were added to the Blockchain, and 2) it provides easily accessible evidence of safe handling in the case of a recall.

CSOs are a critical technology for using the Blockchain to prove product authenticity.

Support of other Blockchain Initiatives

Permissioned Blockchains are private Blockchains designed to provide additional functionality not found in the original Blockchain standard. Most Blockchain initiatives in the food industry are permissioned blockchains. The Traceability Blockchain shares data with other Blockchain platforms to ensure that complete traceability can be achieved. The Traceability Blockchain supports both two-way and one-way sharing of data.

Product Integration

The Traceability Blockchain provides a REST API that allows software products to interact with the Blockchain without installing any new software. The Blockchain also supports uploading data using Excel Workbooks or CSV files for an indirect integration with other products. Excel and CSV uploads may be the fastest way for some product to being traceability on the Blockchain.
